  • Social Outreach Committee

  • The Social Outreach Committee is made up of the heads of sub-committees and any interested parishioners.  We support one another in our ministries through sharing and prayer.  We set vision for the parish as whole and other opportunities for parishioners to reach out to the community we live in.
     
  • Food Pantry

  • We have a food pantry which enables us to help those in need. At regular intervals, we ask for specific items to keep our food pantry stocked.  This need is on-going as throughout the year, people come to us for food.
     
  • Campaign for Human Development [ top of this page ]

  • Campaign for Human Development is a nationwide fund-raising organization that makes grants to grass roots self-help groups.  Church of the Holy Family is one of several diocesan target parishes for the annual collection Sunday in November.  Organization planning meetings in the fall.
     
  • Respect Life

  • Focuses on situations in which human life is directly threatened--abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment--and provides outreach to women in crisis.  Promotes pro-life legislation, provides opportunities for education and consciousness-raising.
     
  • Emergency Housing

  • Willing to open home to families caught in an emergency hospital medical situation while visiting in Virginia Beach.  Commitment expected: as needed.
     
  • Soup Kitchen [ top of this page ]

  • Approximately every six weeks, we are scheduled to prepare and serve an evening meal for about 100 persons at the Judeo-Christian Outreach Shelter.  Volunteers prepare food and deliver it to the church kitchen by 5:00 p.m. or purchase bread, fruits and drinks.  A team of six persons brings the food to the shelter on Virginia Beach Blvd. and serves the meal.
     
  • Winter Watch

  • With the Volunteers of America, in cooperation with churches in Virginia Beach, we provide shelter for the homeless for one or two weeks during the winter.  Upon arrival, at church at 9 p.m., the homeless are welcomed into the Family Room, served a light meal, settled for the night and served breakfast in the morning prior to 7:00 a.m. departure.
     
  • Food Baskets: Thanksgiving and Christmas

  • Volunteers prepare food baskets to approximately 80 families in Virginia Beach at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Names of families are obtained through Virginia Beach Department of Social Services, parishioners, and other sources.  Food is donated by parishioners.
     
  • Giving Tree [ top of this page ]

  • The Giving Tree, held in Advent, provides gifts, baked goods, and clothing to needy people in the community through established charitable organizations.
     
  • Habit for Humanity

  • In Cooperation with other churches in Virginia Beach, Church of the Holy Family provides financial support and volunteers to assist in building affordable housing in the community.  Two builds are usually planned a year.
     
  • Interfaith Advisory Board

  • These organizations exist to provide networking among churches to develop solutions to community problems and seek volunteers to assist in community outreach efforts.
     
  • Legislative Advocacy

  • Keep the parish informed on upcoming Justice and Peace legislation. Educate parishioners on Justice and Peace issues.  Encourage letter writing to legislators.
     
  • Meals on Wheels

  • Our parish supports a team of people who deliver meals the first week of each month.  Meals are packed daily (from 10:30-11:00 a.m.) and picked up at Sentara Nursing Home, 3750 Sentara Way, VA Beach.  Deliveries take approximately one to one and a half hours and helpers return to the nursing home with trays.  Most routes consist of six to seven deliveries.  You will always have an experienced partner with you.  Substitutes are used when a team member is unavailable. Commitment: two hours a month.
     
  • Transportation [ top of this page ]

  • Persons willing to provide transportation to Mass.  A.) Personally arrange to pick up individuals on an as-needed basis.  B.) Drive Van - be on a schedule to drive van/bus from nearby facilities to bring a group of residents to church.  Scheduled approximately every six weeks.
     
  • Red Cross Blood Drive

  • Two blood drives per year: January and July.  Volunteers needed to help recruit donors and assist with the drive.
     
  • Sowers of Justice

  • The Office of Justice and Peace of the Diocese provides  organizational support to the parish and individuals to assist in carrying out specific ministries.
